2. Something new & it might involve a crown!…Arizona & New Mexico, April, 2023

Day 5 4.4
Happy Birthday Sara!  My oldest, my only daughter who is the busiest woman on the planet.  Im sending her good vibes hoping she has a wonderful birthday!

The temp was 26 degrees this morning but the windchill was 13& the wind sounded like it was going to knock down the condo.  Sherry debated with herself & we talked over the ride today, but in the end she called it.  Nothing about the weather was conducive to riding today.  She hadn’t planned a zero day, but that’s what today would be.  Fortunately, the Wild Women Saloon was right next door to us.  It was a freezing cold walk to lunch, but drinks were good & so was the food.

She spent the day working; I spent it reading in front of the fire place & the wind screamed outside & trees bent sideways.

But the super fun & surprise of the day ended up being Patty & her cousin, Mary Ann drove all the way to Heber to have dinner with us.  Another trip back to the saloon, but the food was great & the conversation was awesome…such a highlight to a Plan B day!

Day 6 4.5
Its a cold cold morning, but not much wind, so Sherry bundled up in all her awesome bike gear & took on Day 3.  She would be riding 56 miles todayanother first for her.  The miles will continue to add up due to the zero day she took yesterday.

Thought this was kind of funny…she’s off again!

Goofing off while holding Sherry’s bike while she goes pee along the road.

I’d done my research for today…no DQ but there was Trappers Pie in Snowflake, AZ.  That’s the town we landed in….

.Snowflake was discovered by two Mormon guys…one named Snow & one named Flake…for real.  We had dinner at a new BBQ place.  It’s a dry town with only one dive bar on the outskirts…BOO!  But we tried itit was a bit of a hoot, but Ive never quite had a whiskey sour like this one.  But, two interesting things I learned:  1.  Sherry told me in Dive Bars you have to order simple & told me the three or four things I should ordernone of them being a whiskey sour; & 2. You can make a close Gingerale by mixing some Sprite & few drops of bittersit was pretty good!  We had a few laughs for sure tonight!

Day 7 4.6
Lots of road & nothing else…for miles & miles.

IMG 0129.JPG

Random gate to nowhere.

Every morning when possible, just like I do when I’m on a road trip camping, I’d fill a thermos of hot water for afternoon tea…such a nice treat.

Not much shoulder, but wide open space for sure.

A pretty little old church on our route.

IMG 0183.JPG

We ended our day in the Zuni Pueblo….not much to see, no alcohol allowed…a bit weird but there was no other lodging around.  The room was comfy & we were ready to hit the bed anyway.

IMG 0193.JPG

On the sunny deck, this cat just jumped right up into my lap for a bit of a cuddle.

Three cats, but two stuck around….one being a bit elusive; but the other was super cuddly (don’t tell Sammy about them!)

It was a full moon tonight..the Pink Moon, but not any great opportunities to photograph it….but I tried anyway.

Day 8 4.7
Breakfast was included at the Zuni Pueblo & it was delicious!  Blue Corn pancakes & enough to feed three people.  I took the eggs & bacon for my lunch & split the pancakes with Sherry….it was soooo good!

I got bored once in awhile.

So, Sherry had 25 miles to go from Snowflake then turn at the crossroads & head into Zuni Pueblo.  There was nothing in between except this unincorporated town of Witch Well.  Theres only a walk up liquor store, which does a huge amount of business, since the towns on both sides are dry.  I was so happy to meet these four humans…as I waited for Sherry to ride here.  They were a hoot & I’d love to know all their stories…a couple that was traveling on a two year trip through the states…Carolyns husband is French; Karen is from a nearby town & has been friends with Carolyn since 4th grade but they met in Okinawa; the 4th guy is a philanthropist trying to start a food bank nearby; & most of the people (which there are alot) that live in Witch Well are outlaws, people who want to be off the grid, survivalists, etc….such an interesting place!

It was a party by the time Sherry showed up, we were all hooting & hollering when she road in.  So fun to meet Carolyn & Karen…I am starved for people-interaction & they were the perfect people to meet in literally,….the middle of nowhere!

IMG 0265.JPG

On a long stretch….she just keeps going & going & going.

IMG 0270.JPG

And, back into Zuni Pueblo….but we wouldn’t be staying there tonight.  Since, Sherry had taken a zero day due to the weather. a few of our lodging spots were off causing us to back track each day.

Crossing the border to New Mexico!

IMG 0279.JPG

It seems like an endless road.

IMG 0281.JPG

The views today were amazing! (But I was just on part of this road last fallso beautiful!)

Tonight we were staying at the Cimmaron Rose BNB.it was adorable!  And, Sherry, our host was very very cool (she had the New Mexican braid Im so envious of & if/when I ever move here, Ill definitely grow my hair outI want that braid!)
